WSOP Circuit Calgary Kicks Off the 2025 Canadian Poker Season

The first big event of the year for Canadian poker players is about to get started in Calgary. WSOP-C Calgary Jan is one of the biggest poker series in the country and in 2024, it was Canada’s biggest Circuit event.

Last year’s January festival saw more than $5.8 million in total prizes despite the brutal cold, and this year the weather looks to be significantly better, at least to start the series. The 13 days of poker action get going on Wednesday, Jan 8 and action runs until the 20th with 17 events on the schedule.

Most of the schedule will be familiar to WSOP-C Calgary players but there are a few changes. The extra event this time around will go to a first-ever HORSE tournament in modern Alberta with Day 1 of the mixed game going on Sunday, Jan 12.

WSOP-C Calgary Jan 2025

There is a lot that will be familiar for players who have been to Deerfoot before for a WSOP-C event. Much of the schedule is a redo of previous events, with only a few tweaks across the schedule.

As usual, the series starts and ends with a Big 30 Stack game. The NLH/PLO Mix will be the side event on Opening Day, while the ever-popular 4-Flight game runs Day 1a on Thursday.

The Seniors and Ladies events are also back, with the Seniors running on the opening weekend and the Ladies running on the final weekend. The $1k and it’s Turbo brother are also back, along with Mystery Bounty and PKO action. As usual, the High Roller runs on the final weekend of play.

First-Ever HORSE in Modern Alberta

Alberta is absolutely horse country but that has mostly applied off the poker tables. On the tables, the HORSE mixed game has been absent from the scene.

Until now. Starting on Sunday, the $800 HORSE will see players playing alternating rounds of limit hold-em, limit Omaha, limit razz, limit stud, and limit stud8 with a Day 2 planned on Monday to finish it out.

Entries for the HORSE are open for 9 levels on Sunday, and they’ll bag up after Level 12 to return for Day 2 on Monday. Blinds are 40 minutes long with a 30k starting stack and the game changes every eight hands.

Main Event Starts Jan 16

The big show, as always, is the $1,700 Main Event. Last January’s Main Event saw a whopping $2.234 million in prizes with just shy of 1,500 entries and this year looks to be even bigger.

Jan 16 marks the first of three starting flights for the Main, with days b and c coming Friday and Saturday. Sunday, Jan 19 will be Day 2 where play is scheduled until Level 27. Any players still left at that point will bag up and return on Monday to finish it out.

  • Day 1a – Jan 16, 11 am
  • Day 1b – Jan 17, 11 am
  • Day 1c – Jan 18, 11 am
  • Day 2 – Jan 19, noon
  • Day 3 – Jan 20, noon
