The poker community is abuzz as the World Poker Tour (WPT) announced its plans for the 2023 WPT World Championship with a record-breaking $40 million guaranteed prize pool. This is a significant bump from the 2022 championship, which already had a $15 million guarantee but saw an overwhelming turnout of 2,960 entries, amassing a prize pool of $29,008,000. In the end, it was Canadian Eliot Hudon who walked away with a trophy and the top prize of $4,136,000.

Adam Pliska, WPT’s CEO, expressed the organization’s excitement for the championship’s growth. “The WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas is poised to reach new heights and we wanted to match that expectation with a guarantee that no live poker tournament has ever seen before,” Pliska remarked. “The journey to December begins now, and we plan on giving players another unforgettable experience at Wynn Las Vegas.”

The 2023 iteration of the championship is scheduled to take place from December 12-21 at the luxurious Wynn Las Vegas. With buy-in of $10,400, four starting flights and the grandeur of a televised final table, it’s building on the momentum from 2022 and general live poker tournament boom that we’re experiencing right now.

But the highlights don’t stop at the Main Event. The WPT World Championship festival is set to be a bustling affair, with over 30 supporting events catering to poker players across the board. The WPT Prime Championship follows its 2022 debut, which gathered a prize pool of $5,267,100. For this year, it’s touting a $5 million guarantee and is all set to be televised on December 19.

The festival boasts the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop scheduled for December 18-20, bringing together poker’s elite. The $25,700 High Roller is on the calendar for December 17-18, making way for the WPT Alpha8, which has a buy-in of $50,000 and is due to take place from December 20-21.

The entire festival kickstarts with a $600 No Limit Hold’em multi-flight tournament from November 29 to December 4, carrying a $1 million guarantee. It sets the stage for a series of events including the WPT Ladies World Championship, the much-anticipated Mystery Bounty, the Seniors Championship, and the Seniors High Roller. Not to be overlooked, mixed game aficionados have a variety to choose from, including the $1,100 HORSE Championship and a novel addition, the $3,000 Dealer’s Choice Championship.

Meanwhile, the competing WSOP Paradise, in collaboration with GGPoker, is slated for December 3 to 14 in the Bahamas. The WPT has certainly set the stakes high, and now all eyes turn to see how the WSOP will respond.
