Connecticut legalizes online gambling as Gov. Ned Lamont (D) signed a House Bill 6451 on May 27. With it The Constitution State becomes seventh state that legalized online poker.
“By signing this bill into law, Connecticut is now on the cusp of providing a modern, technologically advanced gaming experience that will be competitive with our neighboring states and positions us for success into the future,” Lamont said in a statement.
The measure is a result of an agreement that Lamont’s administration reached with Mohegan Tribe and Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which operate two biggest casinos Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun.
The federal agency must approve any changes before online gaming can begin. And even after that, it usually takes a year before the first hands are dealt, so don’t expect online poker in 2021.
Connecticut has a population of 3.6 million, which is significantly less than Pennsylvania (13 million), Michigan (10 million) and New Jersey (9 million), but still more than likes of Nevada (3 million), Delaware (1 million) and West Virginia (2 million). The latter state is not running any games though, as the player pool is just too small to run a poker site there without a shared liquidity pool.
The same might be with Connecticut, but there has been no word what tribes will do. Three operators most likely to partner with them are of course PokerStars, partypoker US and WSOP.com.
