2023 WSOP Day 42: Ryan Tosoc Leads Main Event After Day 4

The action was intense at the Horseshoe Las Vegas and the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino on Monday despite no new players winning WSOP gold at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP).

The historic 11-day Event #76: $10,000 Main Event No-Limit Hold’em World Championship continued well past the money bubble on Day 4 and ended the day with a new chip leader in Ryan Tosoc.

Event #77: $777 Lucky 7’s No-Limit Hold’em battled down to just five hopefuls while two other events began their opening day.

Jeppe Bisgaard Better Off Than Some After Bubbling 2023 WSOP Main Event

The nerves, tension, anticipation, and excitement were all in the air to start Day 4 of Event #76: $10,000 Main Event No-Limit Hold’em World Championship with the action just 10 players away from the money bubble. The bubble added an extra hour to the day with the clock stopped while players were hoping to earn at least a min-cash of $15,000 scheduled to be awarded to the top 1,507 players.

Three players in Jeppe Bisgaard, Yueqi Wang, and Peter Nigh all hit the rail two players away from the money to split $30,000 three ways for a $10,000 prize for each player. The WSOP subsequently hosted a one-hand flip between the three players. Bisgaard won a seat to the 2024 WSOP $10,000 Main Event and his $20,000 prize was better than the $15,000 min-cash and even better than the next pay jump to $17,500.

Ryan Tosic Leads Final 441 Players in 2023 WSOP Main Event

The short-stacked players began to loosen their ranges after the money bubble broke resulting in large lines for payouts as players began to hit the rail quickly.

Jamie Gold, who previously won the biggest Main Event prize at the WSOP after memorably winning the $12,000,000 top prize at the 2006 WSOP Main Event. It was only appropriate for Gold to introduce this year’s WSOP Main Event as it was a foregone conclusion based on the other bracelet events that this year would smash previous records. While the prediction came true with the 2023 WSOP Main Event becoming the new gold standard for poker tournaments with 10,043 entries creating a $93,399,900 prize pool, Gold won’t be among the players to compete for the $12,100,000 top prize after hitting the rail on Day 4. Two other WSOP Main Event winners in Johnny Chan and Scott Blumstein also hit the rail on Day 4 while Joe Hachem (1,485,000) and Chris Moneymaker (435,000) still keep their hopes alive for a repeat performance with chips in play when the action resumes for Day 5 on Tuesday at 12 p.m. for five more blind levels of two hours each with blinds at 10,000/25,000 along with a 25,000 big blind ante.

Ryan Tosic won two big hands near the end of Day 4 to snag the chip lead over the 441 players to survive with a 205 big blind stack of 5,120,000 for 205 big blinds. The American already won a bracelet on the virtual felts in 2018 and is looking to add his first live bracelet to his poker resume in a huge way.

Mitchell Halverson finds himself in a familiar spot just inches behind Tosic with 5,100,000 in chips. During the pandemic, Halverson took 15^th place in the 2021 WSOP Main Event and is hungry to advance to the final table and beyond.

Meanwhile, Day 1d chip leader Nicholas Rigby remains near the top of the leaderboard for the fourth straight day. Despite dropping out of the top 10, Rigby, who is affectionately earned the nickname “Dirty Diaper” after showing his love of thanks to trey-deuce during the 2019 WSOP Main Event where he took 52^nd place for $136,100. bagged up 3,665,000 for 146 big blinds.

Day 2d chip leader Maurice Hawkins is still alive to add his first bracelet with a healthy stack of 1,755,000. Hawkins holds the record for the most WSOP Circuit championships after winning 15 rings but has often been in the press for other reasons including a lawsuit from his former backer a few years ago. Day 3 chip leader Antonio Mallol Heredia was unable to get much going but will have his chance again on Day 5 with 890,000. Chance Kornuth finished Day 3 just behind Heredia and had a much better Day 4 to end the day with 3,200,000.

Anthony Scarborough Leads Final 5 in Event #77: $777 Lucky 7’s

The three-day Event #77: $777 Lucky 7’s No-Limit Hold’em once again proved to be popular with 7,323 entries creating a $5,007,175 prize pool across three opening flights on Friday to Sunday. Monday witnessed the field trimmed from the 317 hopefuls that were already in the money trimmed down to just five players each locking up $125,777 with their eyes on the bracelet and hefty $777,777 top prize.

Anthony Scarborough is in the captain’s chair with 140,000,000 in chips for 56 big blinds for a commanding chip lead of nearly double the 70,700,000 his nearest competitor in Julien Montois advanced with. Despite the chip advantage, it is anyone’s game with three other impressive players in the mix in Shawn Daniels (47,400,000), Istvan Briski (32,400,000), and Charles La Boissonniere (13,400,000) all hunting for their maiden WSOP bracelets.

Stacks aren’t super deep but there is a bit of playability with 40-minute blind levels when the action resumes at the Horseshoe on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

The three-day Event #79: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em with 2,068 entries creating a $4,601,300 prize pool to smash last year’s attendance of 1,349 entries by more than 53 percent. The day ended after 17 blind levels of 40 minutes each just past the money bubble with 317 players earning at least a $4,002 min-cash and 310 players finding a bag to Day 2 kicking off on Tuesday at 10 a.m. All players have their eyes on the bracelet and the $682,436 top prize with Seth Davies kicking off the penultimate day with the chip lead after winning a monster flip near the end of the evening when his jacks were good against big slick.

Meanwhile, the four-day Event #80: $25,000 H.O.R.S.E. High Roller, kicked off with a strong start as 98 entries flooded in on its opening day, contributing an impressive $2,303,000 to the prize pool. It’s worth noting that these figures are expected to grow further as late registration remains open until the start of Day 2 on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Five-time WSOP bracelet winner Josh Arieh emerged as the chip leader on the opening day over the 56 survivors, driven by his determination to capture his sixth coveted bracelet. The final payouts and total prize pool will be revealed once the action resumes.

July 11 WSOP Schedule

The focus will continue to be mostly on the 2023 WSOP Main Event on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 as it heads into Day 5 already deep in the money.

However, the Main Event is far from awarding a bracelet and there should be a sizeable rail as Event #77: $777 Lucky 7’s plays down to a bracelet winner on Tuesday while a second bracelet will be awarded in a one-day online event. Two other events will continue to get one step closer to their inevitable conclusions, while players will hear the iconic ‘shuffle up and deal’ in two new bracelet events.
