Tommy Nguyen Wins First Ring in High Roller
Tommy Nguyen had every reason to smile today. He came into the day around the middle of the pack with 189k, but while I wasn’t watching the action very closely, every time I checked out stacks during the course of Day 2, Nguyen had the big one.
He was the big leader when I finally got eyes on the game four-handed and I got there just in time to see him turn a set of nines and send Jorge Artiga Pacheco out in 4th place. It was a massive pot that saw Nguyen four-bet the big blind after Mike Farrow opened under the gun and Pacheco three-bet the button.
Only Pacheco called and Nguyen kept firing on every street, putting Pacheco all in on the river. Pacheco called with the top pair of flopped queens but Nguyen set him up and sent him home. Nguyen then proceeded to find massive cooler against Mike Farrow when Farrow’s queens were crushed by his kings to build a 9:2 lead over Mike Leah going into heads up.
That’s when things got a bit absurd. Leah and Nguyen agreed to take a short break, but that break extended quite a bit longer than expected. Nguyen was outside and when he tried to come back in he was carded by security at the front door. His ID was still at the cage after being taken for paperwork processing for a cash over $10k (standard procedure in Alberta casinos) so he was unable to prove his age.
It took around 20 minutes to convince a guard to escort him to the Chrome room, and staff here verified that he was certainly of age, and heads-up in a huge tournament. He took it well and sat back down with a smile. Leah was also a great sport about the long wait, but there was nothing long after that.
Leah and Nguyen sat down for heads up and after a limp-shove-call line starting and ending with Leah, it was tens for Nguyen against ace-ten for Leah. The board ran clean for the tens and Nguyen had his first ring after just a single hand.
This was his first ring, but he’s no stranger to big scores and hardware. He has over $2 million in lifetime earnings, with about a million of that coming from a 2018 Bracelet in the Monster Stack. Interestingly, despite the high earnings, this was just his third live win.

Mike Leah Out in 2nd Place for $82,565
Mike Leah Heads up was a very quick affair in the High Roller, though it took a while to get there. They took a break once they got two ways and the break was delayed a bit. When Tommy Nguyen returned, he sat down and got into the first hand.
Mike Leah was on the button and limp-called when Nguyen shoved the big stack. Leah was down about 9:2 and woke up with ace-ten, but he ran into pocket tens for the hot-running Nguyen. The board ran 7♣5♠Q♦J♣J♦ and the tens held, sending Leah to the rail in 2nd place after just a single hand heads up.
-
Mike Farrow Out in 3rd Place for $58,740
Level: 26 (40000/80000/80000) Entries: 2/294 Prizes: $577,710 Mike Farrow Mike Farrow just met a brutal end in the High Roller for 3rd place.Big stack Tommy Nguyen raised the button to 165k, then shoved when Farrow three-bet the small blind to 400k. Farrow snap-called but ran into a cooler with queens into kings for Nguyen.
The board ran clean for the kings and Nguyen chipped up to about 9.7 million with only 11.8 million in play. He is now heads up against MIke Leah, however — no matter how many chips Leah has, he is dangerous, and no doubt he’d love to grab his first Calgary ring.

Final Four High Rollers
Level: 25 (30000/60000/60000) Entries: 3/295 Prizes: $577,710 They are down to three left in the High Roller with Tommy Nguyen holding the big lead. He was already in the lead when he just sent Jorge Artiga Pacheco to the rail in 4th place when his turned set of nines won over top pair of queens for Pacheco. It was a huge pot that saw Mike Farrow raise-fold under the gun when Pacheco three-bet to 125k from the button and Nguyen four-bet the big blind for 320k.
Pacheco called to 4♦8♣Q♠. Nguyen didn’t let up, firing 230k on the flop, 400k on the 9♥ turn and shoving the big stack on the A♥ river. Pacheco called all streets with a long tank on the river. His king-queen was no good when Nguyen tabled the pocket nines.
Below is a look at the final four players including Mike “GoLeafsGoEh” Leah, the 11th winningest player in Canadian poker history.

20 Left in HR
Level: 20 (10000/20000/20000) Entries: 20/294 Prizes: $577,710 The High Roller is down to 20 players left now. Full prizes to 21st place are under the Payouts tab, but I still don’t have eyes on this game as the Main Event final table is now down to three left with lots of money left to play for.
-
Final Three Tables
Level: 19 (10000/15000/15000) Entries: 26/294 Prizes: $577,710 The High Roller is down to the final three tables with 26 players left now. I’m still focused on the Main Event but prizes to 27th place are updated under the Payouts tab. After a quick scan of the tables, it looks like Tommy Nguyen is the leader now with a bit more than a million, but serial ring winner Mike Leah looks to be second with a bit more than 800k in front of him while Zoran Pribilovic, on the same table as Leah, has just a hair less.
-
In the Money
Level: 18 (6000/12000/12000) Entries: 39/294 Prizes: $577,710 They are now in the money with 39 players left. Most of the prizes so far are updated in the backend but I’ll be slow on this one today as the Main Event just hit the final table,
-
Bubble Time
Level: 17 (5000/10000/10000) Entries: 46/294 Prizes: $577,710 The High Roller is into bubble play now with the clock paused and hand-for-hand play in progress until the next exlimination.
-
High Roller is 4 Off the Money
Level: 16 (4000/8000/8000) Entries: 49/294 Prizes: $577,710 The High Roller is back in action with about half of the opening level in the books. They are down to 49 remaining now, 4 players off the money. I won’t be watching this one very closely until later in the day, but I’ll try to post some updates on numbers and payouts as the day rolls on.

Vince Lam Leads High Roller Day 2
Event 16: $2,200 High Roller ($1,965 + $235) Date: Jan 20, 1 PM Blinds: 40 Minutes Entries: 51/294 Prizes (Winner): $577,710 ($123,847) Day 2 of the high roller is set with players returning 6 off the money. Edmonton’s Vince Lam is the big stack going into Day 2 with almost 700k. He is about 8k ahead of Jorge Artiga Pacheco with Bradley Ellis, Mike Leah, and Michael Farrow rounding out the top five.
Leah will clearly be one to watch on Day 2. He is 11th on the Canadian money list and has a slew of rings to his name already. He’s still looking for his first Calgary ring, however, so no doubt he’ll be a tough opponent on the final day of play.
Day 2 action starts at 1 PM in the Chrome room with blinds at 4k/8k/8k in Level 16 and they’ll play down to a winner before it ends. I likely won’t be watching this one until late in the day, but the Deerfoot staff will be tracking the prizes so I should at least be able to keep the numbers and bust-outs updated fairly regularly through the day.

Three More Hands in Day 1
Level: 15 (3000/6000/6000) Entries: 52/294 Prizes: $577,710 Day 1 is nearly complete and it looks like they’ll come back for Day 2 7 players off the money. It’s possible they’ll still lose a player or two in the final three hands, but seems very unlikely that they’ll lose enough to hit the money before tomorrow.
Hand-for-hand bubble play should start very early in Day 2. Stay tuned for the seat assignments for Day 2, which should be out in about an hour.

13 Off the Money in Final Level
Level: 15 (3000/6000/6000) Entries: 58/294 Prizes: $577,710 The High Roller players are into the final level of the night now with 58 players left alive. That puts them 13 off the money with about 25 minutes left in Day 1. At this point, it seems like even money whether they make the money or bag before payday.
-
$123k for the Winner
Level: 14 (3000/5000/5000) Entries: 64/294 Prizes: $577,710 The prizes are in with the field now confirmed at 294 entries for prizes of more than $575k. The winner tomorrow will get more than $123k for their troubles with the top nine players all pocketing 5-figure scores at least. See below for the prize summary with the full list loaded under the Payouts tab shortly.

294 Entries (Unofficial)
Level: 13 (2000/4000/4000) Entries: 97/294 Prizes: $577,710 Entries are closed for the High Roller with 294 on the board. I’m still waiting on the payouts to confirm that number, but if it holds it looks like 45 players will share in $577,710 in prizes tomorrow.
There are three more levels of play tonight with the bags expected to come out at the end of Level 15 around 2 AM. It’s likely they’ll still be outside the money when the bags come out but there are still 2 hours of poker left to play so it’s at least possible they could hit the money spots.
-
More than $500k for the High Rollers
Level: 10 (1000/2000/2000) Entries: 126/260 Prizes: $510,900 The High Roller is now into the final three levels of entry with the prizes over $510k and 260 entries. The registration desk is open for a bit more than 2 hours now with the expected shutdown at around midnight tonight.
-
More than $430k in Prizes
Level: 7 (500/10008/1000) Entries: 162/219 Prizes: $430,335 The High Roller field is nearly at 220 entries with players just returning for Level 7. That means there are six more levels with registration open and nine more levels in Day 1. The prizes are now at $430k and they need about 35 more entries to hit $500k.
Just as a reminder I won’t be watching this one until later on Day 2 as the Main Event will be my focus until they award the big ring.
-
More than $300k
Level: 3 (200/400/400) Entries: 153/153 Prizes: $300,645 The High Roller prize pool is over $300k before the first break of Day 1. The first break is a few minutes away and when they return for Level 4 there will be 9 levels of entry with 12 levels before the bags come out.
-
Nearly $270k in Prizes
Level: 3 (200/400/400) Entries: 137/137 Prizes: $269,205 Level 3 is just underway in the High Roller and the field is at 137 entries for prizes of just shy of $270k already. I expect to see another 100+ entries in this at least before the registration desk closes around midnight tonight with likely prizes of more than $500k. Last year in January this event got 346 entries for prizes of almost $680k.

Tommy Nguyen Wins First Ring in High Roller
Tommy Nguyen Winner of the High Roller at WSOP-C Cal Jan 2025 Tommy Nguyen Tommy Nguyen had every reason to smile today.

In the Money
Level: 18 (6000/12000/12000) Entries: 39/294 Prizes: $577,710 They are now in the money with 39 players left. Most of the prizes so far are updated in the backend but I’ll be slow on this one today as the Main Event just hit the final table,

Bubble Time
Level: 17 (5000/10000/10000) Entries: 46/294 Prizes: $577,710 The High Roller is into bubble play now with the clock paused and hand-for-hand play in progress until the next exlimination.
