2025 WSOPC Calgary – Event #11: $1k NLH Turbo

It was Ring #3 for Nicholas Lee tonight in the $1k Turbo. It was a roller coaster ride heads up as he and runner-up Mark Aylward-Nally swapped the lead several times. Lee finally emerged victorious with less than 40 big blinds in play when his red jacks held against the flopped second pair for Aylward-Nally with queen-nine on a flop of A♦9♠7♣.

It all went in on the flop when Aylward-Nally check-shoved his second pair and Lee worked out that his jacks were still best and called. The runout was bricks and Lee had his third ring in hand.

This was Lee’s 6th live win and second since November when he bagged the Harvest Poker Classic $1k event. Lee seems to like the January series here at Deerfoot Inn & Casino — in Jan 2023 he won Event #4 for his first ring, then took down the Flip & Go in Jan 2024 for ring #2. Now, Jan 2025 has brought ring #3 in the $1k Turbo, so I’d be willing to lay some heavy odds that he’ll be back for Jan 2026.

It finally happened late in Level 30 when Lee raised to 400k and Aylward-Nally called to see a flop of A♦9♠7♣. Aylward-Nally check-shoved over a 250k bet from Lee and Lee called.

Neither player hit the ace, but Aylward-Nally was on second pair with queen-nine. Lee had that beat with red pocket jacks and the 5♦4♠ runout were bricks. Lee had the advantage at that point and Aylward-Nally had to settle one short of the ring.

The lead is moving back and forth on the final table and Mark Aylward-Nally is now the leader. He just got a double to 5 million after he raised preflop to 300k and Nicholas Lee called.

Aylward-Nally fired 175k on the K♣2♦J♥ flop and Lee called to the A♣ turn. Lee check-called a bet of 620k to see 3♠ river. Aylward Nally shoved for almost 2 million and got the call, but Lee mucked when Aylward-Nally showed ace-ten for the turned pair of aces.

Mark Aylward-Nally started heads up with the lead, but Nicholas Lee hit two pair to grab a big double into the lead. He looks to be close to 5 million with Aylward-Nally on about 2.4 million.

In the previous level, Mark Aylward-Nally opened to 200k then called when Jacob Hobday shoved the small blind. Aylward-Nally had kings against ace-queen and while Hobday hit a queen, it wasn’t enough.

Garett Maybery was short and shoved 450k over an under-the-gun open from Nicholas Lee to 150k Lee called for a race between his pocket fives and king-jack for Maybery. The fives held on a queen-high board.

It’s pretty even between the final three right now. Nicholas Lee looks to be leading with 2.7 million while Mark Aylward-Nally disclose behind with 2.65 million and Jacob Hobday is sitting on about 2 million.

In the previous level of play Mark Aylward-Nally raised to 125k and Nicholas Lee called from the big blind. The flop was 5♥3♦7♠ and Lee fired 100k. Aylward-Nally called to the 7♥ turn.

Lee check-raised from 150k to 360k and Aylward-Nally called. With the pot at 1.1 million, Lee shoved 600k on the 8♥ river and forced the fold.

Alex Alliston was down to about 4 big blinds and shoved. Garret Maybery reshoved with more, and Mark Aylward-McNally called with the biggest stack. Aylward-McNally was on pocket eights, Maybery had tens, while Alliston was on seven-eight. The tens held on a K♦6♣J♠3♠A♦ board for a double plus to send Alliston out in 5th place.

On his way out, Alliston asked to shout out his Mom Catherine, so Hi Mom! Your boy did good!

There are about 5 minutes to play in Level 7 and the field is at 178. Last January, this game got 212 entries so this year’s field is still a bit shy of 2024, but with close to two hours left to enter the game, it looks like a reasonable bet to come close or beat that number.

There are 56 players in the Turbo $1k in Level 1 with about 5 minutes to play in the opening level. As expected there are quite a few familiar faces in the crowd including Stephen Dauphinais, Andy Truong, Sunny Lubana, Tyler Panas, Ryan Smith, Ryan Cairns, and Mike Leah.

Fatima Nanji is also among the players in action today playing her first event of the series. She’s been around all week though, and players who need help with Canadian taxes and/or rebates from taxed US scores should hit up her Yaletown Accounting desk in the hallway outside the Sundance room. She’ll be there all week during business hours and she understands the unique tax situation that faces poker players, so she’s an excellent resource to help get you sorted out with the CRA.

The Turbo $1k is on the side tonight with the action getting underway at 4 PM in the Chrome Room alongside the dwindling field in the Two-Day $1k. They sit down with 30k in chips for 20-minute levels until the ring is decided.

There are 11 levels of late entry, which should put the final chance to enter at about 8:10 PM Tuesday night. I won’t be watching this one very closely to start as the Two-Day will still be playing down to it’s ring, but once they finish that one I’ll move over to cover the Turbo.

Fatima Nanji is also among the players in action today playing her first event of the series. She’s been around all week though, and players who need help with Canadian taxes and/or rebates from taxed US scores should hit up her Yaletown Accounting desk in the hallway outside the Sundance room. The Turbo $1k is on the side tonight with the action getting underway at 4 PM in the Chrome Room alongside the dwindling field in the Two-Day $1k. They sit down with 30k in chips for 20-minute levels until the ring is decided.

There are 11 levels of late entry, which should put the final chance to enter at about 8:10 PM Tuesday night. I won’t be watching this one very closely to start as the Two-Day will still be playing down to it’s ring, but once they finish that one I’ll move over to cover the Turbo.
